There’s no excuse not to visit Mulhouse!

Mulhouse is located just across the border from Basel Switzerland, in southern Alsace. It is also very near to Freiburg Germany and Colmar France. With its great location, you can get a taste of many different cultures.

Though many people don’t visit Mulhouse for its scenery, there are many interesting museums to behold. Aside from the quirky museums, visitors will find a handful of well-kept parks to stroll through as well as narrow, winding streets to meander down.

Let’s explore some of the great museums of Mulhouse. We’ll begin with the Electropolis. This museum is perfect for children and those who have an interest in the scientific world. It contains exhibits that display different forms of electricity. This museum will truly awaken your mind!

Not far from Electropolis you will come across the Musée National des Chemins de fer. Within the walls of this museum, you can see a collection of trains from Europe. Visitors will find nearly 100 steam locomotives, railcars, luxury rail cabins, electric locomotives and wagons. As you walk through this museum you can read the chronology of 150 years of French railway history. Certainly an ideal place for all train buffs! Don’t miss it on your visit to Mulhouse!

Next we come to the Musée National de l’Automobile. If you are a car lover, you’ll want to add a trip to this museum to your itinerary. Here you can admire more than 600 vehicles, all housed in a garage-like atmosphere. See the sexy appeal of the Bugati, then check out the stately Rolls Royce. To see all of the cars on display here will take a few hours, so take your time and enjoy!

Aside from science and transportation related museums in Mulhouse, you can also pay a visit to the Musée du Papier Peint (Wallpaper Museum). Here you will find wall-size panoramas highlighting foreign wars, tropical beasts, myths and complicated fantasies. This museum is credited with having the world’s largest collection of wallpaper. For all of you wanting to re-decorate a room in your house, visit this fascinating museum for some decorative inspiration! You will certainly be enlightened.

If you’re not much interested in walking around museums, there are other things to do in Mulhouse. You can hangout in the vieille ville, which centers around the place de la Reunion. It is a medieval craftsmen’s and tradesmen’s district that nowadays is totally car-free. Here you will find many cafes and bars that extend out into the street.

Many come to this area to view and admire the architecture, largely preserved through the years. From the place de la Reunion you can take a walk down the romantic tree lined paths of Parc Salvator. In the summer, you can find a variety of open-air concerts. A great place to sit and relax, unwind and enjoy your surroundings!

Mulhouse is a charming little city to visit, with all of the museums visitors can explore, it is perfect for those travelers wanting to open up their minds with traveling!

Plus, being so close to Switzerland and Germany, you can easily travel to Basel or Freiburg and add that many more cities to your travel resume!

i am travelling from basel to paris on a friday night and i have to spend 3 hours for my connection at Mulhouse ville between 00.30 am till 3.30am. are there any all night cafes inthe neighbourhood of the train station where I can spend this time?

  2. akoos says:

Typically, most cafes/bars in Mulhouse close by 12am-1am. I would suggest you stay at the station, perhaps read a book or magazine while you wait. It would be a good idea to pick up some light snacks and/or refreshments before arriving in Mulhouse, so you don’t feel like you’re stuck in the station with nothing to eat or drink. Hope that helps, enjoy your travels!

    thanks for the prompt reply.
would the station be open at this hour? is there any authority who would be able to confirm the same?

    thanks a lot once again.

After doing some research with the SNCF (French National Railways) it seems that the Mulhouse Ville station hours are Monday-Sunday, 3:30am-12:30am. Taking this into consideration, the station will not be open while you’re there. You can see further information for this station here. Good luck!
