#TalesOnRail Artists in Residence Day 6: The Chocolate Train!

The grand finale of our trip: The Chocolate Train! This is a round-trip train ride that can be booked all in one ticket. You board the train in the morning in Montreux and are served hot chocolate or coffee at your seat (along with a chocolate-filled croissant, of course). Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the route before your first stop at the Gruyeres cheese factory, where you’ll learn a bit about the history of cheese & see it being made! And yes, of course there is a taste test.

After that, you’ll take a quick bus ride to the town of Gruyeres itself — a stunning, charming, tiny town with a castle overlooking the surrounding area. You have some free time to explore the town and enjoy lunch wherever you like — we chose to have some fondue, of course — and then it’s off to Broc to visit the Cailler Chocolate Factory!

Check out our video to get a “taste” of the whole experience (can’t ever resist a good pun):

Re-trace our steps with the Chocolate Train:

  • You can book the whole trip in one go: just search for Montreux to Broc on our site. The Chocolate Train runs Monday-Friday in July & August, and on Monday/Wednesday/Friday in June, September, and October.
  • If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Montreux, definitely check out the Eurotel Montreux. The views are INCREDIBLE and the restaurant is absolutely delicious. It’s also about a five minute walk from the train station and center of town, so super convenient. Check out Montreux Riviera for more inspiration!
  • Take some time to wander around Montreux — it’s an artsy city along the Swiss Riviera, with stunning views across the water and a famous Freddy Mercury statue! We also found a delicious open-air market along the water just outside our hotel.
  • While in Montreux, you can also take a ride on the ferry that travels to the most visited historical monument in Switzerland: the stunning Chillon Castle — the best part is that this boat is included in your Swiss Travel Pass! This castle inspired us the way it has inspired artists for centuries, including Lord Byron and Jean Jacques Rousseau.

Thanks so much to our friends at Montreux Tourism, Swiss Travel System, and Switzerland Tourism!
